PROMOTING A GREEN ECONOMY

Policies Based on Green and Circular Economy Principles

Adopting green and circular economy policies offers significant opportunities to achieve substantial, near-term emissions reductions across multiple sectors, with the cement and concrete industry playing a central role.

Promoting a Circular Economy

We promote and advocate for a green, circular economy, primarily focusing on:

Waste Directives: We advocate for municipal, industrial, as well as construction, demolition, and excavation waste management regulations that enable the utilization of non-recyclable waste for energy recovery and material reuse. By utilizing residues in the cement production process, we lower our CO2 footprint while contributing to landfill reduction and decreasing the consumption of fossil fuels and other raw materials.

Lower-Carbon Products: We promote more widespread adoption of lower-carbon products in all types of construction projects. Lower-carbon products have a reduced clinker factor, provide the same performance standards as conventional products, and are key for advancing global CO2 reduction targets.

Clean Electricity: We advocate for renewable electricity policies that enable and promote the energy transition and clean energy generation. Clean electricity generation at a broader scale will be key to reducing indirect CO2 emissions and meeting clean electricity 2030 consumption targets.

Carbon Pricing: CEMEX supports the adoption of emissions trading systems, such as cap-and-trade schemes, the most efficient mechanism to establish a market carbon price and contribute to achieving CO2 mitigation targets.

Government & Multilateral R&D Funding: We promote government and multilateral funding for research and development aimed at accelerating the development and implementation of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies or any other technology that can scale the decarbonization process.

In our evolution towards a green economy, we assist a just transition by integrating all stakeholders, from employees to neighboring communities.

Our efforts include developing the right skills and capabilities in our employees, promoting a constant dialogue with our communities, reaffirming our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and advancing our Sustainability and Climate Action agenda.

Collaboration and Leadership

We believe global industry collaboration is key to accelerating the development of strategic climate action enablers at a global scale. Therefore, we are active members and hold leadership positions in national, regional and global industry associations in the countries where we operate.
