CEMEX, S.A. de C.V. ("CEMEX") (NYSE: CX, BMV: CEMEX.CPO) announced today several initiatives to assist with the tsunami relief effort in Asia, including the creation of a fund in which any contributions made by CEMEX employees will be matched two-for-one by the company, with a minimum corporate contribution of $2 million. These funds will be distributed through the United Nations to reach those areas with the greatest need.
In addition to monetary contributions, CEMEX has undertaken several additional initiatives to aid the relief efforts in Aceh and South Sumatera. First, CEMEX Indonesia has designed and built the website, www.acehcare.com, which provides updated information on news, information, donation distribution reports and lists humanitarian organizations receiving and distributing aid for the victims in Aceh and South Sumatera. CEMEX updates the website regularly in coordination with the National Coordinating Agency for Natural Disaster and refugees Relief and relevant ministries.
Furthermore, CEMEX has donated US$15,000 to "Médecins Sans Frontières" (MSF), an international humanitarian aid organization that provides emergency medical assistance to populations in danger in more than 80 countries. CEMEX Indonesia's employees have also provided technical support to the Logistic Coordinator of MSF in several ways, including the establishment of an office in Medan, [close to Banda Aceh], providing day-to-day information about the status of goods being delivered to Aceh and what goods are needed most. Additionally, CEMEX employees have aided in the purchase of various items being sent to Aceh. Finally, CEMEX is working closely with the authorities in Thailand to provide assistance in the search for survivors and victims of the tsunami.
"Like the rest of the world, CEMEX's employees are deeply concerned about the tragedy in Asia, and thousands of them have donated their own time and money to aid the communities hardest hit," said Lorenzo H. Zambrano, Chairman and CEO of CEMEX. "We are honored to provide technical, financial and volunteer support to the agencies working in the area."
